Dirty Axolotl: the leucistic rebel
Have you ever seen a white and pink axolotl… but with dark spots all over its body?
Don't be alarmed, it's not dirty. It's not a common leucistic or a piebald. You're looking at a Dirty axolotl , a spotted leucistic that looks like it came straight out of living graffiti.
This phenotype is one of the most beloved by those who love the unusual. It's not a rare mutation, but rather a spontaneous pigment expression that makes each specimen unique.
And since he couldn't be missing from our collection, at Axoles we've recreated him in hyper-realistic silicone replicas, so you can have the rebel of the gang in your display case.
What is a Dirty Axolotl?
The Dirty Axolotl is technically a leucistic axolotl with irregular black spots on its body, especially on the face, back, and legs. Unlike the piebald, where the spots are genetic and well-defined, the Dirty Axolotl's spots appear randomly throughout growth.
These marks can vary greatly from person to person: some are as light as shadows, others look like ink splashes. That's why it's popularly known as "dirty," although there's nothing dirty about it... just cool!
Why do leucistics get "stained"?
Dirty hairs appear when, in a leucistic individual (who should have very little pigmentation), some melanophores (black cells) begin to activate unevenly during development. It's not a stable mutation, nor is it considered a formal phenotype in genetic terms, but it is a highly sought-after pattern for its unique aesthetic.
In short: he's an axolotl who decided that pure white wasn't for him.
