Golden Axolotl and Albino Gold : two living jewels of the axolotl world

Imagine if the sun had slipped into the water and, instead of melting, it turned into an axolotl . That's how magical the golden axolotl and the albino golden axolotl , also known as the golden axolotl or yellow axolotl , are two of the brightest, most adorable, and captivating species in existence.

But beware: although both look like they came out of a treasure chest, they are not exactly the same. One has more intense golden sparkles, the other shines like an angel in the sun. Here we explain the differences, why they are so special, and how you can have your own without an aquarium... thanks to our hyper-realistic silicone golden Axoles .

Golden Axolotl: the sun that walks underwater

The golden axolotl , also known as the golden axolotl, is a captive-bred species characterized by its yellow skin with metallic highlights, sometimes speckled with small, darker spots for texture. It has golden or light brown eyes, and its gills are often a deep orange or reddish hue.

This type of axolotl has pigments called xanthophores that produce its golden-yellow color. Unlike the albino, it does contain melanin, albeit in small quantities, which allows it to have a more intense and sometimes more varied color.

Golden Axolotl or Golden Albino: a creature of light

The albino golden axolotl is a gem in its own right. Although it also has a golden coloration, it is softer and more uniform, and most notably, it completely lacks melanin, giving it paler, more translucent skin. Its eyes are pink or red, typical of albinism, and its appearance is almost celestial.

This phenotype reflects much more light, making it appear to sparkle under the right lighting. In some photos, it looks like it's been painted with golden watercolors… but in person, it's even more striking.

How are these golden phenotypes created?

Neither of these golden axolotls exists naturally in the Xochimilco canals. Both are the result of selective breeding in captivity, where breeders seek to preserve and accentuate certain genes, such as xanthophores (yellow) and, in the case of the albino, the absence of melanin.

This practice is not just aesthetic: it also helps study genetic mutations, reproduction, and adaptations of this species in controlled environments.

Fun facts to brag about

  • The albino golden axolotl was one of the first albino variants documented in Europe in the 20th century.

  • In Japanese culture, golden axolotls are associated with good fortune.

  • Under white LED light, the albino gold appears to glow, as if it has its own light.

  • Some golden axolotls have mottled patterns that look like dragon scales.

  • On our silicone replicas, the golds are the hardest to paint… but the most spectacular!
