Leucistic and Albino Axolotls : Twins or Rivals of the Aquatic World?

Sometimes, looking at an axolotl is like witnessing living magic. But when it comes to the leucistic axolotl and its mysterious sibling, the albino leucistic axolotl , the confusion is part of the charm. Which one has the button-like black eyes? And which one seems to be staring from another plane with its reddish eyes?

If you're here because you saw one and thought, "Is this alive or a toy?", welcome! At Axoles, we create hyper-realistic, handmade silicone replicas of Mexican axolotls , and today we're going to tell you all about these two very similar, yet one-of-a-kind phenotypes.

Leucistic Axolotl : the most famous axolotl in the world

The leucistic axolotl is what most of us imagine when we hear the word “axolotl”: a pinkish-white body, gills like soft, fuchsia-colored tufts, and completely black eyes.

Leucism is a genetic condition that blocks much of the pigment in the skin, but it doesn't affect eye color, which is why they remain dark. This type of axolotl is not albino, although many people believe it is. Its angelic appearance and deep gaze have made it popular in toys, stuffed animals, cartoons, emojis ... and now also in our hyperrealistic sculptures.

And where did these beauties come from?

Albino Leucistic Axolotl : almost a twin, but more mystical

Now, the albino leucistic axolotl is like its spiritual twin, but with one detail that changes the whole vibe: it has red eyes. This variant combines the pale skin of the classic leucistic axolotl with a complete absence of melanin, including in the eyes.

The result is an axolotl with an even more ethereal appearance, as if straight out of a pre-Hispanic myth or a Japanese legend. Its red gaze may seem intense or enchanting, but it always inspires wonder.

Differences between Leucistic and Albino Leucistic Axolotls

Characteristic Leucistic Leucistic Albino Skin color White with pink tones White with pink tones Eye color Dark Red Pigmentation Low (except eyes) None (includes eyes)

Gills Intense reddish pink, sometimes paler

Very high popularity Highly appreciated by collectors

Both phenotypes are the result of selective breeding in captivity. In the wild, axolotls typically have darker, more camouflaged colors. But in laboratories and breeding facilities, genetic mutations such as leucystis and albinism were selected to preserve their rarity.

So these pink-white axolotls aren't just beautiful: they're a testament to the delicate balance between science, nature, and wonder.
