Melanoid Axolotl: the ninja of XOCHIMILCO
If axolotls were superheroes, the melanoid would be the mysterious hooded vigilante: silent, elegant, powerful, and with that "I know something you don't" air.
It is the darkest axolotl of all, with an imposing appearance, but at the same time with a heart just as tender as its pink cousins.
On this page, you'll learn more about it: from its genetics, colors, rarity, and personality, to why it's one of the favorite axolotls among collectors.
And yes… you'll also see why our silicone melanoid Axoles look like they're straight out of a science fiction movie.
What is a melanoid axolotl?
The melanoid axolotl is a phenotype characterized by completely dark coloration, from head to tail tip. Its skin can range from jet black, charcoal gray, or even dark brown, depending on the lighting and its exact genetics.
Its eyes are also black, making it the visual opposite of the leucistic axolotl. But the curious thing is that, although its appearance is serious, its personality is still playful, slow, and with that "it wasn't me" expression that all axolotls share.
Melanoid or just black?
Many people confuse melanoid axolotls with “ common black axolotls ,” but they are not the same. The true melanoid lacks iridophore and xanthophore pigments, giving it a matte color, without a metallic sheen or golden highlights. Its skin resembles wet velvet.
In other words, it’s not just any dark axolotl … it’s the purest of the dark ones!
Main characteristics of the melanoid
Characteristic Melanoid Skin color Black, gray or dark brown Eye color Dark Pigmentation Full
Gills Dark, sometimes reddish
Moderate Popularity (highly desired in breeding)
How do you get this phenotype?
Melanoid skin is the result of a genetic mutation that eliminates certain types of pigment cells. Unlike leucistic or albino skin, a high concentration of melanin is preserved, giving the skin its uniform dark color.
This phenotype doesn't often appear in the wild, as it would be more vulnerable in its natural habitat. However, in captivity, breeders have managed to maintain and select this variant for its unique aesthetics and robust character.
Fun facts you probably didn't know
It is the favorite axolotl of those who love the gothic, the mysterious or the minimalist.
Many melanoids are born lighter in color and darken with age.
Under certain LED lights, your skin appears to absorb the light like a black hole (seriously!).
It is one of the most genetically stable phenotypes, making it ideal for captive conservation programs.
There is an even darker variant, called “super black” or “black velvet,” but the classic melanoid remains the most beloved original.
